Front Page Park St School magIt is time to catch up with the Park Street School Magazine from the summer of 1938.  Sports features highly in this issue and I will summarize all the Sports news here. First are the Swimming and Athletics Pages.  There is no mention of my father, but his younger brother Ron Dinnis is mentioned several times.  Here is Ron:Ron Dinnis

SWIMMING

by P.W. Simmonds

The great event of this term was, of course, the Swimming Sports, held on July 6th at North Rd. Baths,  where we had the supreme satisfaction of winning the shield by scoring 34 points against the next schools 22.  For several years we have had to be content with second place, so we are all the more pleased to be top at last.  We also retained the Team Race Cup, our team represented by R. Hall, A. Fowler, R. Yallop and E. White, winning easily.

In the 100 yds Championship, Hall came second, being beaten by only a few yards.  the same boy was placed 3rd in the Diving Competition.  The other results were:-

A. Fowler – 1st 2 lengths, 2nd Breast.

E. White – 1st 2 lengths, 2nd Back.

R. Yallop – 1st 1 length.

J. Phelps – a very promising 11 year old swimmer, 1st in his race of 1 length.

LIFE SAVING.  We hope to enter a team for the Schools’ Life Saving Championships on July 22nd.  Several boys will be taking examinations for the Society’s Life Saving Certificates, – we wish them success.

CERTIFICATES.  Fewer boys than usual have as yet, passed their 10, 25, and 100 yds. tests.  we must put this right.  there are many boys who passed the 25 yest last year, what about that too?  Jump to it!

ATHLETICS by A. MARTIN

The Athletics Sports which were held in Preston Park on June 2nd were a great triumph for the school, – not that we won any trophies, but for the fact that we gained the highest number of points ever.  Those of the team who had given up so much time after school were therefore well rewarded.  Here is a list of the boys who represented the school:-

100 yds championship. R Blake

100 yds L Sawer, A Mitchell, R Dinnis

220 yds R Sheppard, R Waite, R Dinnis

300 yds Championship R Turner

Hurdles L Sawer, E White, R Catt

Long Jump A Montgomery

High Jump R Blake

Team R Waite, A Mitchell, R Blake, and R Dinnis

R. Blake had a very busy afternoon, for he came 4th in the High Jump, 6th in the 100 yds Championship, and then helped the team to gain third place in the relay race.  R. Sheppard ran well to be placed 2nd in the 220 yds – next year we hope to see him first.  And then to finish off the afternoon, A. Montgomery won the long jump and brought a further honour to the school by being chosen to represent the town for this event at the County Sports which were held at Hastings.  Well run, – everyone of you!
