The Howells Family Preferred Dogs

The Howells family haven’t been mentioned much so far.  They were the family that adopted my mother when she was a baby.  I don’t know much about them, so of course I shall get busy and find out some more!  They lived in Shoreham-by-Sea, in Sussex.

What I know so far is from old photographs of Mum’s.  And it is evident straightaway that they were dog people!  I know from what Mum told me that she always had a dog and she loved going out with it.  Here is a photo of her with one of her dogs:

Enid and dogLooking at this photo, the dog starts looking familiar and I think I’ve seen him before!  I look back at the mystery wedding photograph I posted a few days ago: https://jackiedinnis.wordpress.com/2013/07/26/mystery-war-wedding-photograph/

The couple of the left are Mr and Mrs Howells (Winifred and Jack I have since found out), and the dog she has in front of her looks to me like the one my mother is with in the above photo!  What do you think?  I zoomed in and this is the dog:

Is this photo yielding up it’s secrets, one person/dog at a time?  Who will I find next?  Oh, and the dogs name?  I know one of Mum’s dogs was called ‘Chum’, and this dog looks more of a Chum than the one in the first photo, don’t you agree?

And you’ve really got to love dogs to take one to a wedding and have it posing in the photographs!

  1. Jackie, my mom’s family had the same kind of dogs (as the 2nd one above) always. The last one was my aunt’s (that bit me when I was little), but up to then they always had one. Are they English Springer spaniels? I love the idea of a dog at a wedding!!

Your mom looks adorable! I love the wedding canine guest. Now that is a dog family. When I went over family photos with my mother-in-law towards the end of her long life, she remembered the name of every dog her family had. I jotted down the names on the back, and the dogs brought back very happy memories.
