Making my own history – The Day I Saw the Queen

Sometimes I wonder if I spend too much time looking back. Although I very much enjoy researching my family history, I have noticed I can easily become too fascinated with my ancestors and their lives. I need to remind myself to live my life in the here and now.

I began thinking about my future family, and wondering if they would ever spend time looking back at my life. If they do, I would like to leave them some interesting memories of mine to find. With this in mind I noticed The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were visiting East Sussex on the 31st October 2013. They were due to have lunch in Harveys brewery, Lewes, at around mid-day. This is just up the road, I couldn’t miss this opportunity!

It was raining, there was a lot of people there, my own photos aren’t marvelous, but here they are.

We were told the Queen would be approaching from this little street.

A dray cart driven by horses cae along.

An old-fashioned drayman with horses came along.

Everyone wanted a photo of the old fashioned horse and cart

The following day the local newspaper published a huge spread of photographs, many national newspapers did too, notably The Times and Daily Mail. There are many photographs on the Daily Mail website, also on the British Monarchy Facebook page. Here are my favourites.

This whole experience makes me wonder if maybe I will start a new blog ‘Making My Own History’. It might make me appreciate each day more and look for special things to do that are worth writing about. When I look back at my family descendents I am interested in the day-to-day life they lived, but it is also nice when you find something that stands out from the normal.

Sounds like a great idea, Sandy, but make sure the rest of us know where to find you.
